Geography
The book starts with her living in Krakow, Poland. Her mother has not much choice but to stay there and trade her belongings to send to Anita and her brother. At this point the ghetto had been built and many were sent to live behind walls, it became unsanitary and gloomy. Lapanow, Sweden is where Anita's mother decides to send her to live for a while. Lapanow was filled with many jews but at the time had not been taken over by the Nazis yet and was described as a small village. Another location mentioned a lot were concentration camps in Plaszow and Auswitch, these conditions were terrible and sickening. By the time they were sent to the camps they had been emptied with furnaces and showers to murder children and adults. The story moves around and doesn't have a true setting, because Anita's setting was the cruel world she had to face.
